Cali Faye Collection – Dress 47 Review

How awesome is this Summer ready dress! Just when I needed a boost, the testing call came and I was on it like peanut butter to jelly! At first, I was hesitant with the slightly revealing mid-section, it’s not a style I normally go for. However, since I’m always up for a challenge and really needed something to kick-start my sew-jo; I decided to go for it.

Pattern Features [PDF only]

Here is a little about the design from the Cali Faye website: The midline sits at the smallest part of the natural waist.  Tie front closure, gathered skirt, and optional pockets!  The waistband fits comfortably snug, with the help of an elastic back waistband, so we’ve included an invisible zip on the side seam. The hem line is intended to fall just above the knee but is customizable to your needs.

I have to mention zipper instruction is crystal clear and very easy to follow for any sewer that normally shy’s away from zipper insertions.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, if a PDF pattern doesn’t provide a copyshop version, I would pass on it. But lately, I’ve actually changed my outlook on this and (dear I say) enjoyed the tapping process. I used it as a time to reflect on the project and focus my energy to enjoy the task.

Sewing & Instructions

As always, the testing process for Cali Faye is an amazing experience. Before I could post a concern, there was an answer waiting for my question in the Facebook group. The instructions are very clear with the exception of connecting the waistband. It took a few re-reads to wrap my mind around the process, but once I got it, it’s full steam ahead.

Fabric & Styling

Knowing I wanted to wear this dress often during the summer, I decided to use my light-weight floral linen fabric. I was saving it for something really special and it was the most suitable fabric, I had in my stash. I love the drape and flow it give for this design. I enjoyed using this color scheme and the overall styling was an amazing theme. I really wanted to go beyond the usual style of my photos and I think it turned out great.  My goal was to depict a scene that could be found on the Anthropologie’s website. This dress is 100% a Summer Essential.

I’m really excited to make a knit version of Dress 47, although the recommended fabrics are woven. I have no doubt that a stable knit, with good recovery will be a show stopper. The zipper would surely be eliminated for a knit dress. Keep an eye out, this one will be making a repeat appearance.
